NEWS Red Dogs end Dodgers season in extras
The 2010/2011 Lacombe Dodgers season came to a end Sunday afternoon as the Red Dogs defeated the Dodgers 7 - 2 in PBL Championship Semi-Finals.
The score was not indicative of the play on the field though as the Dodgers and Red Dogs were locked in a tight game up until extra innings. Kyle Wierenga was on the bump facing off against Red Dogs ace Scott Hornstra and the two were locked in a pitching duel from the get go. Both Kyle and Scott gave up only 2 runs through 7 innings. The wheels fell off for the Dodgers in the 8th inning. Errors by the Dodgers opened the floodgates and the Red Dogs scored 5 runs to take a commanding lead. Unfortunately the Dodgers could not muster a comeback and fell to the #1 seeded Red Dogs. The Lacombe Dodgers would like to that all the amazing fans that came out to games this season. As well all the sponsors and the town of Lacombe who supported us through the 2010/2011 season. As webmaster I would like to thank all of you who visited our website this season. The Lacombe Dodgers sporting some excellent mustaches played a flawless game to beat the #1 seeded Rocky Red Dogs 3 - 1 last night in PBL Playoff action. Myles Shaw threw a complete game gem for the Dodgers keeping the Red Dog bats off balance all game. Andre Touchette led the dodgers with 2 RBI on the night. Next action for the Dodgers is Sunday at 11AM down at Great Chief Park in Red Deer. Bring out your mustaches and rowdy spirit and show your Dodgers some love!
2011 PBL Championships
With one game remaning in the 2011 Dodgers season the Dodgers look ahead to the PBL Championship tournament. Facing the Rocky Red Dogs in their first game of the playoff the Dodgers will look for a convicing win to take them directly to the Pool A finals. Dodgers give away win against Red Dogs
Tuesday night had your Lacombe Dodgers head out west to Rocky Mountain House to take on the Red Dogs. Brendan Huber went to the hill for the Dodgers, facing Kirs Johnson for the Red Dogs. The Dodgers got off to a good start in the top of one, scoring Myles Shaw on a Tim Wasdal single to right field to come out 1-0 early. Rocky had an answer in the bottom half, scoring 3 on 2 errors by the Dodger defense, which could have seen them out of the inning with no runs against. Myles Shaw scored his 2nd run of the game when Brian Smith hit a 2 run homerun in the top of three to make it 3-3 after 2 1/2. Huber and Johnson battled as no runs were scored in the 4th and 5th. Then Rocky scored 3 in the bottom of 6 after again the Dodger defense faltered. 2 errors again got Rocky up 1, and a bloop single by Coleman Maddix scored 2 unearned runs to take a 6-3 lead going into 7. But the Dodgers answered with 3 in the top of 7 when Brian Smith hit a triple to score 2 and then scored on a error by Rocky to keep the inning alive. Bottom of 7 saw Rockys' lead off batter get on with another Dodger error, and a single by Richard Saarela put 2 on. Huber then walked Kris Johnson intentionally for the force. With the bases loaded and none out. A passed ball strikeout scored the winning run for a 7-6 Red Dog win.
In the victory Kris Johnson went all 7 giving up 9 hits, and 1 walk while strikeing out 6. While Huber got the loss, he went all 7 as well. Striking out 3 and walking 2 with 8 hits and a hit batsmen in the game. Offensively the Dodgers were lead by Brian Smith at 2 for 4 with a triple, a homerun, 2 runs scored, and 4 RBI in the game. While Tim Wasdal also went 2-4 in the game and Myles Shaw went 2-3 with 2 runs scored. This keeps the Dodgers at 3rd in the league with a 7-6 record and 14 points. Also keeping Rocky in 1st at 12-2. Wednesday night the Dodgers took to the road to take on the Innisfail Indians. Brendan Huber got the start for the Dodgers while Jesse Scheunert took the mound for the Indians. The Dodgers took an early lead scoring 1 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd inning while Brendan Huber kept the Indians off the board through 3 to give the Dodgers a 4-0 lead after 3. The Dodgers got another in the top of 4 while the Indians answered that with one of their own to make it 5-1 through 4. Then Innisfail scored 3 in the bottom of 5 to make it 5-4 after 5. But the Dodgers scored an insurance run in the top of 7 and Huber held the Indians in the 6th and 7th for a 6-4 Dodgers victory.
Offensively the Dodgers were lead by Tim Wasdal going 2-4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. While Josh Ernst went 1-3 but had 3 RBI's on the day. Also Vernon Johnson went 2-3 and scored a run. Huber went the complete game giving up 9 hits, 1 walk and 1 hit batsmen in the game,with only 1 K. Needless to say the Dodger defense played well. As well Scheunert went the complete game for the Indians giving up 9 hits with 4 walks and a hit batsmen, while striking out 3. This puts the Dodgers at 7-5 for the season and still holding strong at 3 in the North Division and 3 place in the league standings. Next for the Dodgers is the Eckville Angels Wednesday July 13th. Monday had the Dodgers head down Hwy 2 to take on the Carstairs Cubs in a make up game from May 23. Sitting at 5-5 the Dodgers sent Tim Wasdal to the mound. The Dodger offense came out and got an early lead in the first when Ron Cook scored early on a Andre Touchette double. The Dodgers then scored 4 more in the 2nd, while Wasdal held the Cubs through 2 innings. Carstairs then scored 3 in the 3rd to make it 5-3 Dodgers after 3. Lacombe answered with 2 runs in the 4th and Wasdal got 3 up 3 down in the bottom of 4. Next the Dodgers scored 6 to take a 13-3 lead in their half of 5. While Carstairs generated 3 in the bottom half with help from a Dodger error to start off the inning. Myles Shaw took over from Wasdal to get out of the inning. At 13-6 the Dodgers scored 1 in the 6th and 5 in the 7th for a 19-6 win.
Wasdal had 6 K's in his 4 innings of work while giving up 5 hits, 1 walk and 1 hit batsmen. While Shaw had 7 K's in his 3 innings and only gave up 1 walk. Offensively the Dodgers were powered by Touchette, Wasdal and Ernst who pre-game enjoyed the delicious Double Down from KFC. The trio combined to go 7 - 11 with 7 RBI, 5 BB. This brings the Dodgers to 6-5 for the year still good for 3rd place overall in the PBL. Next action is July 6th in Innisfail vs. the Indians. Red Dogs squeak by Dodgers
Tuesday the Dodgers headed out to Rocky Mountain House to take on the Red Dogs. Myles Shaw went to the bump as Morgan King got the start for the Red Dogs. The Dodgers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Ron Cook lead the game off with a double off the wall and Myles Shaw scored him with a single to left field. Shaw was stranded at 1 as the next three batters strikeout. Shaw then held the Dogs off the board until the bottom of the 2nd when they scored 2 off consecutive singles and a ground ball out to put runners in scoring position for Aaron Helmer, who drove in the 2 with single up the middle. The Dodgers answered with 2 runs of their own in the top of 3 when Ron Cook hit his second double and Brian Smith drove him in. Then Josh Ernst drove Smith in with a single. Shaw stayed strong till the 5th when the Red Dogs were able to score 2 on a couple of singles and a error by the Dodgers. The Dodgers couldn't generate any more runs the rest of the way as King went the complete game for a 4-3 Dogs win.
Shaw had 5 K's while giving up 7 hits and 2 hit batsmen in his 5 1/3 innings of work. King went the whole way for the Dogs and had 8 strikeouts with 7 hits and 1 walk against him. This leaves the Dodgers at 5-5 on the season, good for 3rd overall in the league and 3rd in the strong North Division. After Friday nights game in Red Deer vs. the Goliath Razorbacks got rained out, they hosted the Olds Athletics on Sunday. Game 1 saw Tim Wasdal get the start while Aaron Sept took the mound for the Athletics. Both pitchers started out well when finally the Athletics got on the board in the third with 2 runs. But the Dodgers answered back in the bottom of 3 with runs of their own to make it 2-2 after 3 innings of play. Again the Athletics scored 2 in the 4th to take the lead, while the Dodgers couldn't get much going. Then the Athletics score 4 in the 6th to go up 8-2 after 6 innings of play. All the Dodgers could muster in the bottom of 7 was 3 runs to make it a 8-5 final in game 1.
Game 2 saw Kale Wierenga take the mound for the Dodgers. Wierenga held the Athletics off the board through 4 innings of work. While the Dodgers scored 1 in the 1st on a Ron Cook homerun and 1 in the 3rd when Myles Shaw drove in Cook with a single. At 2-0 Dodgers going into the 5th, Olds scored 3 started by a Dodger error and 2 singles. Then they scored 1 in the 6th on another Dodger error and held the Dodgers offense the rest of the way for a 4-2 victory. This leaves the Dodgers at 5-4 on the season. 2011 PBL ALL STAR SELECTIONS

Dodgers bounce back against Angels
Last night had the Lacombe Dodgers play host to the Eckville Angels, and the Dodgers were coming off a rough outing against Red Deer. Brendan Huber got the start for the Dodgers and went the complete game. While Harlen Griffen also went the distance for the Angels in a 8-1 Dodger victory.
The Dodgers got the scoring started early in the first when Ron Cook lead off with a double and Brian Smith hit a single to score him to take a 1-0 lead after 1 inning of play. Huber kept the Angels scoreless through 3 as the Dodgers scored one in the 2nd and one in the 3rd to go up 3-0 after 3. Eckville did get out of a jam in the third though as the Dodgers had the bases loaded with one out but 2 big strikeouts by Griffen limited the damage. Eckville got on the board in the 4th when Colin Shaw lead off the inning with a double and Kyle French singled him in to make it 3-1. The run was unearned as the inning was kept alive with a dropped third strike by the catcher, which would have been the third out and left Shaw stranded at 2. The Dodger offense got some insurance runs in their half of 4th by scoring 2. Josh Ernst scored his 2 run of the game and Ron Cooked his 3rd after getting on with errors and a passed ball. The Dodgers were up 5-1 after 4. That’s all that Huber needed as he shut the Angels down the rest of the way. While the offense kept hitting, with 1 run in the fifth and 2 more in the 6th for the 8-1 victory. Harlen Griffin went 6 complete giving up 9 hits, 2 walks and striking out 7 in the loss. Huber had 3 hits, 2 walks, 1 hit batsmen but struck out 13 for the win. Offensively the Dodgers were lead by Ron Cook going 2-4 but scored 4 times in the game. Tim Wasdal also went 2-4 with 2 RBI's on the day. Josh Ernst scored 2 runs in the game while going 1-3. This puts the Dodgers at 5-2 on the season, tied for 1st with 10 points. Next action sees the Dodgers in Red Deer, June 24th at Great Chief Park to take on the Razorbacks at 7 o'clock. This will be a good game as the 2 teams are tied with 5 wins. Wednesday night the Lacombe Dodgers played host to the Red Deer Goliath Razorbacks. Myles Shaw went to the mound for his second start of the season and had a rough start. The Razorbacks scored 3 in the first to take an early lead. A lead off walk, a triple and a single got it started for the Razorbacks for 3 runs. Shaw then settled down and got the next three batters. Evan Emerson got the start for the Razorbacks and held the Dodgers in the first 2 innigs, while Shaw went 3 up 3 down in the second as well. Up 3-0 going into the thrid the flood gates opened for the Razorbacks as they scored 5 in the inning. Capped off by a Don VonHollen 3 run home run. Down 8-0 the Dodgers fought back in their half of third with 7 runs of their own. 8 walks in the inning and some timely hits were the story, but the Dodgers left the bases loaded to stop the comeback. Tim Wasdal went to the hill for the 4th, yet the Razorbacks still managed to score 2 on some mental mistakes by the Dodgers. The Dodgers couldn't follow up their 7 run third,by going 3 up 3 down in the fourth. The Razorbacks scored another in the fifth and 2 in the sixth to go up 13-7. The top of 7 brought 5 more runs for the Razorbacks to take a commanding 18-7 lead going into the home half of 7. All the Dodgers could muster in the bottom was 1 run off a Brendan Huber homerun to make it a 18-8 final.
Myles Shaw got the loss in the affair. He sent 3 innings and had 4 strikeouts with 3 walks and 7 hits against him. Emerson went 2 and a 1/3, with no K's, 5 walks and 2 hits on him in the win. Offensivley the Dodgers didnt have much but were lead by Myles Shaw and Brian Smith. Both went 1-2 with 2 walks and a run scored. While Brendan Huber went 1-3 and a walk with 2 runs scored. This puts the Dodgers at 4-2 on the season and into 2nd place now behind the 4-0 Razorbacks. Next axction for the Dodgers will be the Bieseker Canadians Tournament this weekend. The Dodgers went into June in first place at 3-1 and Wednesday the hosted the Innisfail Indians at home. Brendan Huber took to the mound for the Dodgers, while Jay Kirkham went for the Indians. The Indians got the scoreing started in the 2nd when Blaine Hoppins hit a single to score 2 after 2 hits and the Dodgers commited an error to load the bases with 2 outs. They limited the damage to 2 runs as Huber got the next batter with a strike out. The Dodgers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half when Daylan Sigurdson scored on a Ron Cook double after he singled with 2 strikeouts already against the Dodgers. Huber then shut down the Indians for the next 4 innigs. In the bottom of the 4th the Dodgers scored 1 to tie it at 2 on a Huber hit to score Ron Cook. Then they made it 3-2 for the Dodgers in the bottom of 5, when Brian Smith lead off with a walk and stole second.Then Andre Touchette drove him in with a single to center field. Thats all the Dodgers needed as Myles Shaw came in to close the game in the 7th and got them 3 up 3 down.
Offensively the Dodgers were lead by Ron Cook who went 3-3 on the day with a double, 2 singles and a run scored. While Brian Smith went 2-2 and a walk in the game with a run scored. In the game Huber went 6 innings strong, recording 6 strikeouts and giving up 5 hits and no walks in the game. Myles Shaw had one inning of work, and a 3 batter inning. Jay Kirkham went the complete game for the Indians and had 9 K's with 8 hits and 2 walks against him. This keeps the Dodgers in first place at 4-1 on the year. Sunday had the Lacombe Dodgers travel south to Bieseker for a double header vs the Canadians. Kale Wierenga got the start for the Dodgers in game 1 asCam Culp got the start for the Canadians. The Dodgers got the scoring started in the 1st inning when Myles Shaw hit a ground rule double and Kevin Waldern drove him in with a single to right field to go up 1-0 early. Bieseker came back and scored 3 in the bottom half of 2 on a hit batsmen and 2 consecutive singles, to take a 3-1 lead. It stayed that way until the top of 5 when the Dodgers scored Josh Ernst on a sacrifice fly by Myles Shaw. The Dodgers then held the Canadians and scored 3 in their half of the 6th on 3 consecutive walks by the Canadians pitchers and a timely single by Vernon Johnson. Wierenga went the whole way and shut down Bieseker in the bottom of 6 and 7 to get the win in the 5-3 victory for the Dodgers.
Wierenga had 9 strikeouts, 1 walk and gave up 5 hits in the complete game win. Offensivley the Dodgers were lead by Kevin Waldern and Vernon Johnson, who both went 2 for 4 on the day and both drove in a run. While the Dodgers had 5 different players each score a run. This left the Dodgers at 3-0 going into game 2 of the double header Sunday. Game 2 saw Tim Wasdal take the mound vs Jesse Visser for the Canadians. Again the Dodgers got off to a lead by scoring Vernon Johnson after he lead off the game by reaching base on a hit batsmen and Myles Shaw hitting a double. Wasdal kept the Candians off the score board till the bottom of 2 when Ian Jalbert scored on single by Cam Culp. Daylan Sigurdson limited the damage to 1 by throwing out Alan Metzger at home on the play for the third out of the inning. Score stayed 1-1 going into the 4th when the Dodgers scored Kevin Waldern on a Andre Touchette double, but that was all they could muster as he was thrown out at third trying to stretch it out. The Canadians responded with a run of their own in the bottom of 4 on an error by the Dodgers Kevin Waldern,on a errant throw to first. Tied at 2 the Canadians Jesse Visser hit a 2 run home run off Wasdal in the bottom half of 6 to take a 4-2 lead. The Dodgers couldn't muster any runs in the top of 7 for a 4-2 final. Wasdal went the complete game in the loss for the Dodgers and had 4 strikeouts, 1 walk and 5 htis against him in the 7 innings. The Dodgers commited 2 costly errors in the game to help the Canadians to victory. The Canadians used 2 pitchers in the game that combined for 7 strikeouts, 2 walks a hit batsmen and 6 hits in the win. Andre Touchette lead the way at the plate for the Dodgers going 2-3 with an RBI, while Daylan Sigurdson went 2-2 but reached 3 times with a walk. The Dodgers just couldn't get consecutive hits to drive guys in. This leaves the Dodgers at 3-1 on the season heading in to June. Next action is at home, June 1st at 7 o'clock versus the Innisfail Indians who are 2-1 on the season so far. Dodgers down Red Dogs
Friday night the Lacombe Dodgers hosted the Rocky Red Dogs. Nick Ryan got the start for the Dodgers while Scott Hornstra was on the hill for the Red Dogs. Ryan got off to a rough start in the 1st inning walking the 3rd and 4th hitters faced. Scott Hornstra helped his cause by hitting a double driving in both runners and giving the Red Dogs a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the 1st inning. Hornstra then took over on the hill silencing the Dodgers bats.
Ryan bounced back after the rocky start and battled for the Dodgers holding the Red Dogs scoreless for the next three innings which included some sparkling defense by the Dodgers including a runner thrown out at home by Dylan Sigurdson.. After 4 innings of play the score remained 2-0 in favor of the Red Dogs. Ryan came out to start the top half the 5th inning but couldn’t find his control walking the first three batters he faced. Brendan Huber came in relief and with the help of some Red Dog base running miscues, escaped the bases loaded jam. Hornstra held the Dodgers scoreless until the bottom half of the 7th inning. Brian Smith and Kale Wierenga hit two out singles. Vernon Johnson then singled up the middle to drive in Smith and Ernst (Pinch runner) to tie it. Jason Brown then hit a clutch double to drive in Johnson and win the game. Scott Hornstra had 9 K's, no walks and 6 hits in his 7 innings of work but was saddled with the loss. Saturday night brought in the Lacombe Dodgers 2011 season in with the newly named Eckville Angels coming to town. Myles Shaw got the opening day start for the Dodgers, and faced Colin Shaw on the bump for the Angels. The Angels went up 1-0 after 2 innings of play on a unearned run, on a walk by Shaw to Owen Saari. While the Dodgers finally got something going against Colin Shaw in the bottom of 3, by scoring 2 on a Myles Shaw hit that drove in Josh Ernst and Vernon Johnson. The Angels went up agian in the top half of four 3-2 on unearned runs by Brandon Dixon and Owen Saari again on an error by the Dodgers and a walk by Myles.
But the Dodgers came back to tie it up on a triple by Brian Smith to score Brendan Huber after a single to lead off the bottom half of the fourth. The Dodgers brought in Kale Wierenga in the fifth and didn't look back as the Angels couldn't muster anything else for the rest of the game. While the Dodgers, Tim Wasdal drove in Vernon Johnson in the 5th to go up 4-3 and Brian Smith hit a big 2 run Home Run in the bottom half of six for insurance runs to lead 6-3 after 6 innings. Then Tim Wasdal came in the top of 7 to close the door in a 3 up 3 down inning of work. Myles Shaw went 4 innings and had 4 strikeouts, 3 walks and 2 hits against him. While Kale Wierenga gave up 1 hit and had 2 K's in his 2 innings of work. Tim Wasdal got the save in a 3 up 3 down 7th with one strikeout. Colin Shaw went all 6 for the Angels and had 2 strikeouts, and 7 hits against him with no walks. Offensively the Dodgers were lead by Brian Smith going 2-2 with that home run and triple to produce 3 RBI on the day. While Vernon Johnson went 2-4 and scored 2 runs. After a tough loss in the 2010 PBL Finals to the Red Deer Razobacks the Lacombe Dodgers are looking forward to the 2011 Season. With some familar faces leaving the club and some new faces joining the Dodgers look forward to another run at the PBL Championship.
